  • John Keells English Language Scholarship Programme (JKELSP)

    The John Keells English Language Scholarship Programme (JKELSP) of John Keells Foundation was launched in 2004 in collaboration with Gateway Language Centre. This long-term and island-wide project is aimed at enhancing English language skills of school children and youth from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with an aim to improve their opportunities for higher learning and sustainable employment in an increasingly competitive world.

  • Higher Education Scholarship Programme (HES)

    The Higher Education Scholarship aims to promote secondary and tertiary education (Advanced Level and University) for disadvantaged youth, giving those with limited financial means the opportunity to pursue higher education through monthly financial support, thereby increasing their future prospects.

  • Career Guidance Programme

    The Career Guidance Programme is designed to equip GCE O/L and GCE A/L students and school dropouts with the essential skills and knowledge needed to make informed decisions about higher education, technical training, or entering the workforce. On 19th July, a session of this programme was held in Ja-Ela, where 115 students from four schools, ranging from grades 9 to 13, participated. The programme covered crucial topics, including Education and Career Choices, Personal Grooming and Hygiene, Interview Techniques, CV Writing, and Soft Skills. As part of the programme, 101 students were taken on an exposure visit to the Keells Food Factory in Ekala.

  • John Keells ‘Praja Shakthi’ Digital Learning Initiative (DLI)

    This initiative was launched in 2021/22 in partnership with John Keells Foundation, Deutsche Bank, Dialog Axiata PLC, John Keells Office Automation and Keells Food Products PLC to facilitate online learning for economically disadvantaged school children by providing tabs and data packages for educational purposes. In addition, students’ educational progress is also monitored throughout the period in which the device is provided.

    The Program aims to empower school children from disadvantaged families by providing them with the opportunity to learn English fluently. This year, we are extending our support to students from similar backgrounds, focusing on the following schools:

    Through this initiative, we seek to equip these students with the essential language skills they need to thrive academically and professionally, breaking barriers and opening doors to brighter futures. We are committed to nurturing their confidence in English communication and fostering their overall educational development.

  • Mental Wellbeing Sessions for School Children, Parents and Teachers

    A mental well-being and motivational programme was organised under the John Keells ‘Praja Shakthi’ Initiative in Ja-Ela which was intended on motivating underperforming ordinary level students andto highlight the importance of mental wellbeing in school children. The programme was also extended to parents and teachers to create awareness on how they can help children to achieve and sustain a state of good mental health to enjoy their life and environment and make them creative, learn, try new things, and take risks.

  • Livelihood Support: Mushroom Project

    The programme was launched in 2023 and aims to expand the number of mushroom farmers in Ja-Ela, catering to market demand while enhancing entrepreneurship and sustainable income generation among a largely female beneficiary group. The twenty beneficiaries received mushroom pods, cultivation equipment, and materials for constructing cultivation houses, along with agricultural insurance and ongoing training. They will contribute labour as well as some construction materials.

  • Substance Abuse Prevention in Schools

    The substance abuse prevention programme aims to equip early childhood development officers, pre-school teachers and parents, school teachers and students and the community at large with a comprehensive understanding of the risks and dangers associated with drug use. We believe that with a proper understanding of the risks and dangers of drugs and a physical environment to support drug prevention, the probability of children engaging in drug-user behaviours can be minimised. Under this initiative, the following programmes were conducted in Ja-Ela:

    Awareness sessions on Child Protection addressing adolescence-related issues such as love and attraction, anger management, self-worth, cyber safety and screen addiction were conducted in Ja- for beneficiaries of the English Language Scholarship Programme and John Keells ‘Praja Shakthi’ Digital Learning Initiative.

    The School Nutrition Programme focuses on enhancing nutrition awareness and promoting sustainable practices, including school gardening, across ten selected schools located in John Keells Praja Shakthi locations of Colombo 02 and Ja-Ela. JKF and KFP are working with the five schools listed below, supporting them in setting up health clubs and school gardens. Further awareness programs were conducted on the 16th, 19th, 20th, 26th, and 27th of February 2024.
